Flexicystoscopy

PATIENT ADVICE LEAFLET FOLLOWING FLEXIBLE CYSTOSCOPY

Cystoscopy is an endoscopic procedure to examine the inside of the bladder.

A flexible cystoscope uses a bendy telescope.

Your operation will be carried out under a local anaesthetic.  Local anaesthetic gel is administered up the urethra prior to passing the cystoscope.

DOs

  • Contact the hospital immediately if you find you cannot urinate or you are bleeding excessively or you have severe pain or a high temperature
  • Take your prescribed painkillers or Paracetamol as instructed.  You may feel tender and sore following your operation
  • If you are given antibiotics to take home, please complete the course of tablets
  • Drink plenty of fluids. 2-3 litres a day will suffice.  Occasionally you may have a little blood in your urine which needs to be flushed through
  • Have a daily bath or shower
  • You can drive straight away after the cystoscopy
  • Resume work when fit to do so

DONTs

  • Refrain from sexual intercourse until you are comfortable
